Cindy Lanphier is a Senior Adoption Consultant with A Step Ahead Adoption Consultants. Cindy immersed herself in to the world of adoption when she started researching the process of adoption. She quickly became an advocate for adoption education and networking during her experience. She served on the Board of SPAFA, a local adoption support group, for several years and believes everyone needs to arm themselves with education when adopting a child. Cindy holds a B.S. degree in Health Education; Corporate Wellness from Penn State University. Cindy and Mike have been married for 17 years and have a 10 year old adopted daughter; they live in Waxhaw, NC.
Shannon Murphy-Johnson comes to us after working in the world of professional Figure Skating as a young figure skater and an elite coach. Among Shannon’s many strengths is the passion she brings to her work, coupled with her knowledge of adoption, first and foremost as an adoptee and then as an adoptive parent. Shannon and her husband, Kenneth, have been married 25 years and live in Kansas along with their four beautiful children, two of which were brought home through the amazing experience of adoption.
Donna has been an Adoption Consultant for over 11 years. She and her husband adopted their son 13 years ago. John Michael is an active pre-teen and Donna is an at-home mom and consultant. Donna has a great commitment and desire to help others adopt and ensure their adoption journey is a positive one. Donna is very well versed in how adoption works, and will be with you until you have your baby in your arms. The Henson reside in Buford, GA, which is a suburb of Atlanta, GA.
Heather has a BS in elementary education and French from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. For several years she worked as an elementary media specialist, followed by 8 years as a public children’s librarian and director of a small public library. Heather’s life long love of working with children naturally translated into a desire to help create families through the miracle of adoption. During their own adoption journey, Heather discovered a local adoption support group, and her passion for adoption was born. After bringing home their daughter through the help of an ASA consultant, Heather became very active with the adoption support group, encouraging others in their adoption journeys. This eventually brought Heather back to ASA to join her love of working with children with her love of adoption. Heather currently lives with her husband and two children in Orlando, Florida.
My name is Lora Holt. I am 33 years old. I am from South Dakota. I’ve been married to my sweet husband Gene for 11 years. We have been blessed with 2 beautiful children via adoption – Ryan (5) and Zane (1). By trade, I am a registered nurse/drug alcohol counselor, but am currently a stay at home mom with my busy kiddos. I am very passionate about adoption and feel privileged to be a part of A Step Ahead’s adoption team.
Jessica comes to us after working in the business world for over 25 years after initially starting out in Early Childhood Education. Jessica is a single mother with a beautiful daughter, whom she adopted through A Step Ahead in 2015.
As a single woman Jessica was blessed to become pregnant through fertility treatments in 2010 with her son, Truett. Sadly, Truett was stillborn. Jessica then pursued adoption.
Jessica came to A Step Ahead adoption after two adoption match failures.
Jessica recently moved from Colorado to Eastern North Carolina with her daughter and ginormous dog. She has an open relationship with her daughter’s first family.

Lauren has a B.S. degree in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation, and worked for six years as a Senior Supply Chain Analyst for a large furniture retailer before becoming a stay at home mom and adoption consultant. She married her high school sweetheart, Derrick, nine years ago. They live outside of Athens, GA with their two sweet boys who they adopted as infants. Boone is four and Ledger is one. After her second adoption, she felt led to help other families through their adoption journey. She feels passionate about adoption and its role in helping build families, and can’t wait to guide and support you through your adoption experience.
For over 30 years, Nancy has helped families grow through adoption. Nancy has a unique perspective of not only working with adoptive parents, she has also provided services to birth parents and adoptees from her previous years with adoption agency work. Throughout Nancy’s professional career, adoption has been her greatest passion. With Nancy’s wealth of experience with infertility and adoption, she has provided insight, compassion and knowledge when working with families. Nancy has a master’s degree in counseling and is a licensed clinical professional counselor.
Nancy lives in Illinois with her husband Dave (married 28 years). Nancy and Dave adopted two of their children, Alexander from Russia and Catherine from Ohio. Jack, their youngest son, they had biologically through in vitro-fertilization.
